The Government of Canada sees journalists are the “bad guys” in their coverage of the various aspects of oil sands development and extraction. Together with the aboriginals and environmentalists, the media are seen as the ‘enemy’ because they report on issues like the leeching or spillage of oil onto aboriginal land, and the high cost of animal lives lost in the tailings ponds. They expose the impact of the oil sands on workers and the environment, as well as the technological and scientific ‘uncharted territory’ we are in and how we, as a society, will live with all the problems that are likely to arise.
