The Right Kind of Sand Could Make You Rich!
Did you know that there is a way of getting oil from sand in both Canada and the U.S.? Oil sands are a mixture of water, clay, sand and tar so they are also called bituminous sands or tar sands. This is primarily because of how they look and smell. The sands contain a viscous petroleum deposit found in many parts of the world and has only recently been included as part of the world’s oil deposits. This crude oil is being mined and collected by people holding oil sands jobs.
New Technology Means We Can Now Get at These Deposits
The oil in the oil sands is only now being mined on a large scale in Canada, because previously there wasn’t the technology to get it out of the ground and make a profit. Now, it is possible to get to this oil and hopefully it will help counteract the high prices of foreign oil for both the U.S. and Canada. It makes investing in oil sand jobs a potentially profitable thing to do.
How is it Processed?
It takes a lot of energy to process oil sands. There are a number of different processes among which is steam injection and other special refining processes. These have been improved over the past few years and it is expected to get easier and more profitable in the near future.
Some of the oil in the sands is more accessible and can be procured using open pit mining, but where the deposits are deeper in the ground, they must be drilled out using two parallel and horizontal wells. One well uses the aforementioned steam injection, which heats up the sand and makes the normally thick oil flow into the other well and then it can be pumped to the top for collection.
How much oil is produced this way?
Canada produces more than three million barrels of oil per day with nearly all of it going to the U.S. As they get better at mining the oil sands, they will be better able to help the U.S. meet its oil needs, thus reducing the need for importing oils from outside the North America. Oil sands are thought to represent up to two-thirds of the earth’s total supply of liquefied hydrocarbons, with about 1.7 trillion barrels estimated to be in Canada alone.
Investors can Do Well
If people invest money in the Canadian oil companies that now specialize in the refinement of oil sands, it’s estimated that much more, possible hundreds of billions of barrels of oil, can be processed and sold to the U.S. This is prompting many companies to start investing in the production of oil from oil sands in Alberta and elsewhere in Canada.
Such investments make oil sands jobs even more lucrative and worth applying for and as these companies are growing, they invest in new pipeline infrastructure, better technology and more jobs. They will transport ever increasing amounts of oil from the oil sands fields to refineries in the U.S.
Jobs Opportunities Are Expected to Get Even Better
Recently due to the anticipated mining of oil sands, the Canadian government reported that they expect that thousands more jobs will be available through 2012 in the areas where the oil sands are being worked. This makes things better for people in need of a job, as well as profitable for current and future investors.
Some of the workers needed are people who can work as engineers, safety inspectors, steel fabricators, geologists, and many more. It’s estimated that over the next decade more than 60,000 workers will be needed in the oil and natural gas industry in the oil sands regions. Jobs extracting or refining the oil sands aren’t the only jobs that need to be filled. They will also need truckers to carry the product to refineries and the marketplace, laborers, construction workers, accountants, administrative people, caterers, and people with many other skills.
Salaries are expected to be in excess of $100,000 a year, depending on experience and skills. At the moment, some of these jobs are open only to Canadians, but others are open to foreigners as well. The oil sands jobs are posted on Alberta oil sands employer websites.
